Our History

BlackboardFounded over 30 years ago, Chez Gérard has built its reputation on the 'best steak-frites this side of Paris'.

The first restaurant on Charlotte Street, in London's Fitzrovia, was a mecca for carnivores and evoked the old world charm of Paris. The menus were in French, the staff barely spoke English, there were few non-meat dishes and the wine offering was robust but somewhat limited. It was a truly French gastronomic experience.

The evolution of good taste

Today, things have moved on. Whilst ‘steak-frites’ remains the favourite among our guests, new and unusual cuts have been introduced and the menu continues to evolve. There is now a wider range on offer and lighter fish and vegetarian dishes are a permanent and welcome addition.

BlackboardThe menu is still in French, bien sur, but with English descriptions, the wine list features a delicious range of New World wines as well as the perennial favourites, which complement a truly great steak so well!

Upholding tradition

Some things though, haven't changed. Chez Gérard still offers the best French bistro cooking and our chefs only cook with the freshest ingredients, carefully sourced and provenance assured.

There are now 10 Chez Gérard restaurants in some of the finest locations in London, from the City to Covent Garden and our newest restaurant on Rupert Street just off Piccadilly Circus.
